In 1920, her family moved to New York City, where she became the first Hispanic to work at the New York Public Library. She discovered her passion for children's literature and storytelling, leading her to write "Pereza and Martina," inspired by Puerto Rican oral tales. Belpré's work earned her recognition as a writer, editor, translator, and community leader advocating for education.
