María Libertad Gómez Garriga, born on July 18, 1888, was an educator and political leader. She studied at the University of Puerto Rico, becoming an elementary teacher. Gómez advocated for Puerto Rico's independence and social and economic justice. Elected as an alternate member of the Puerto Rican Liberal Party in 1932, she joined the Popular Democratic Party in 1938. From 1940, she served two terms as a representative of Utuado in the House of Representatives and was re-elected in 1952, during which she founded the Puerto Rico tobacco cooperative. Gómez died on July 10, 1961.
